What do I need to buy before my new puppy comes home?

Before bringing home your new puppy, you should have puppy food, food and water bowls, a harness, collar, and leash, a kennel, washable puppy pads, puppy chew toys for teething, and a comfortable bed. These are the basic essential items for feeding, training, hygiene, and providing a safe space for your new puppy.

Key items of must haves we personally use and recommend:

  • Puppy food: Select a high-quality puppy food designed for their nutritional needs. We use Fromm Puppy, and suggest if you change their food, to gradually switch over as it could cause stomach upset. The best way to do this is to mix both foods together, gradually reducing the Fromm over a weeks time.
  • Harness, Collar and leash: Necessary for walks and control, ensure the harness and collar fits properly.
  • Food and water bowls: Choose appropriate sizes for your puppy and consider adjustable heights as they grow. Stainless steel is a better option than plastic.
  • Kennel: Provides a safe space for sleeping and training, important for house-training.
  • Play Pen: Provides a safe place for puppy when they are awake and playing. Promotes safe play in a secure area.
  • Puppy pads: Helpful for accidents during potty training. Washable pads are a great option as puppies cannot easily destroy and ingest the materials of disposable pads; causing intestinal blockages.
  • Chew toys: Important for teething puppies to satisfy their chewing instinct. Frozen washcloths, ties in a knot, also work great for teething.
  • Dog bed: A comfortable sleeping area for your puppy.
  • A lot of love and a lot patience!

Other items to consider:

  • ID tags: Attach to the collar with your contact information.
  • Puppy training treats: For positive reinforcement during training. We send them home with a bag of Charlee Bears.
  • Potty training bells: Can be a very useful tool for dog training because they help dogs communicate their needs clearly, which can lead to fewer accidents and a stronger bond with your dog.
  • Car seat belt or carrier: For safe transportation.
  • Play toys: To encourage playtime and mental stimulation
